Although they seem uninterested now, leaving written accounts of your thoughts and feelings will be a wonderful legacy to your family. What was a pivotal moment in your life? Your memories of momentous events – birth of your children, assassination of JFK, Expo 67, 1970 October Crisis, tearing down of the Berlin Wall. Ron and his writing group will assist you in developing or polishing your writing skills. Or as a beginner, The Write it Now group will help you get started!

The first hour of sessions 1 to 5 is dedicated to beginners. This is a perfect time to learn the basics of photography from Club members and learn how to master your own digital camera. We share photos with fellow members; discuss and offer tips on photo challenges; present various topics of interest, chosen by our members; and occasionally go on field trips. Discussion on book, “Systems of Survival”, by Jane Jacobs. Participants are invited to read selected chapters of the book in preparation. Jacobs is famous for efforts to understand the ‘logic’ of community relations and community ‘systems’. She investigates how these ‘systems’ provide a basis for an ethics that would be appropriate for living within these systems. Ken will help us situate Jacob’s book within some broader social and historical trends and conversations in ethics.

This workshop is designed to help writers in several ways. We gently critique each other’s writing, make suggestions for improvement, and praise what works well. We review the basic tools in the writer’s toolbox such as correct punctuation, stylistic standards, continuity, plot, and pacing. We explore what we’ve learned by applying it to selected passages and study several excellent short shorts to see why they are considered great.

Our Book Club meets once a month to read and discuss an interesting book from a mix of literary genres. Discuss highlights of the book and expound upon your own observations as you enjoy coffee, tea, and cookies. Members choose the book list for the following year during the last meeting in June.

Learn about the incredible Incan civilization and see photos of the spectacular ruins scattered throughout the Sacred Valley. Walk the salt flats and the quinoa fields before climbing the 1,000 feet to reach the jewel of this journey.

This is an easy, relaxing craft that also helps the environment by using cardboard rolls which would normally be discarded. Marielle will guide you through the steps to make a beautiful wall hanging. The colour choice will be yours – it can compliment your décor or be a bold splash of colour! Participants should bring a pair of scissors and a cookie sheet. Marielle will provide all other supplies.

(20) WALK OR SNOWSHOE THE FGTA PURPLE TRAIL

Join fellow outdoor enthusiasts in exploring the Purple Trail, which is part of the Friends of Glengarry Trail Association’s system. This 2 kilometer loop is protected from the winter winds by mature trees – maples, beech, and evergreens. It is groomed using a snowmobile and is suitable for snowshoeing or walking. Brendan, a member of the Raisin Region Conservation Authority team, is well-versed in the identification of the trees and birds you will encounter on this outing.
If this workshop needs to be postponed due to weather, the re-schedule date is Monday, Mar 19 (same time).


(21) VIBROACOUSTIC HARP THERAPY: A New Frontier in Energy Healing

(25) WALKING ENGLAND’S COAST TO COAST TRAIL

The 300 kilometer, unofficial and mostly unmarked, Coast to Coast Walk gives the perfect snapshot of Northern England. From the Irish Sea on the west coast, hike through the Lake District, across the Pennines, the Yorkshire Dales, the Vale of York and the North York Moors, ending your journey at the North Sea coast (Robin Hood’s Bay). Join us as we kick back and enjoy Nicole’s photos of her walking adventure in England.

An 1800’s pioneer creativity, this rug only requires one embroidery stitch. Circles of wool fabric in graduated sizes are layered and blanket stitched to create a decorative table/furniture runner, or wall hanging. Why are they called “penny rugs”? Various sized coins were used as templates to cut the circles. Sometimes a penny was sown in for good luck or to add weight to the rug. Please bring a pair of scissors to class.

The best practice for preserving digital photos is to take them from your camera and save them to your computer. Come join us and visit Cornerstone Farm which is much more than it sounds! Cornerstone Farm is home to a millinery, a yarn shop, and a weaver’s workshop. Mitch makes hats and bags through felting of new and repurposed fibre, teaches knitting classes as well as soap making, crocheting, and introductory weaving courses. Every Friday afternoon, The Millinery is home to “Stitch & Wine”. You can work on your stitching project, discuss ideas, share patterns, and techniques with others while enjoying a glass of wine. Whether you are a novice or an experienced bird watcher, you won’t be disappointed. Cooper Marsh is home to more than 130 species of birds and Mike, an avid birder with the Cornwall Birding Club, will help you locate some of them by their distinct call or markings. So come join us for a leisurely walk through one of Ontario’s most significant marshlands and learn to identify some of Mother Nature’s “musical instruments”. Please note: Although the trails are generally dry, please wear clothing and footwear to suit the weather.

Alexandria is surrounded by a variety of unusual and fascinating places – “As you Like it” is one such place! Jan Cogley custom makes clothing, historical costumes, and highland dance apparel. Some of her costumes were requested for stage productions, movies, and historical re-enactments. Her creativity is not limited to clothing – Jan includes re-upholstering, cushions, and lampshades in her repertoire. And wait… that’s not all! We will also tour her workshop where she repairs furniture, restores antiques, and the store which sells a unique inventory of collectibles from Indonesia, local creations, and antiques.

In this workshop you will learn how to craft your own greeting card. You will be taught the basics of brush calligraphy and how to apply this artistic form into a simple card. Anick, who has over 10 years of experience in Graphic Design, will take you through the fundamental steps of this writing technique. Each participant will receive a calligraphy pen and paper.

Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, and the sun is shining—all announcing the arrival of Spring. After the long winter, what could be better than a hike in the woods? Fortunately, we have been given permission to use a private trail near St. Raphael’s. We will meet at the church parking lot and join Matthew, our naturalist, for an interesting morning walk.
